President Trump Plans Crackdown on Immigrant Truck Drivers

1 month ago 0

President Trump announced a new initiative targeting unauthorized immigrant truck drivers, proposing to replace them with veterans. This plan was disclosed during a military investment summit in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

Trump criticized immigrant truck drivers without legal status, attributing them to many road accidents, despite lacking supporting evidence. He proclaimed that veterans with experience in driving heavy trucks for the military would qualify for a commercial driver’s license immediately.

The proposal appeared to be part of a larger effort by the administration to limit commercial licenses for immigrants, even those residing legally in the U.S. In March, around 200,000 immigrant drivers lost licenses previously granted with work authorization.

In April 2025, an executive order urged the Transportation Department to impose an English requirement for commercial drivers and scrutinize the licenses of authorized foreign workers. Trump has attributed many semi-truck crashes to immigrant drivers, alleging issues with reading road signs and drug abuse, though no comprehensive studies validate these claims.

Foreign nationals aiming to drive commercial trucks must possess work authorization and adhere to standard protocols, including attending driving schools and passing tests akin to any other driver.
