President Donald Trump is urging Muslim-majority countries to join the Abraham Accords as a prerequisite for participating in a new agreement with Iran. These accords aim to establish diplomatic relations between Israel and several Arab and Muslim-majority countries.
Efforts to Normalize Relations
During a recent phone call with leaders of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, Pakistan, Turkey, and Jordan, Trump recommended that these nations normalize relations with Israel. He emphasized the significance of their participation in the Abraham Accords, pointing out the U.S.’s efforts in negotiating the complex arrangement. Trump shared his proposal through a post on Truth Social.
The president also mentioned plans to discuss this initiative with the leaders of the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. These two countries were the first to join the accords in 2020.
Potential Involvement of Iran
Trump suggested that Iran could eventually become part of the Abraham Accords. He noted that several regional leaders expressed interest in including the Islamic Republic of Iran once the agreement is formalized.
Challenges Ahead
Currently, U.S. and Israeli officials do not expect the UAE to proceed with any developments until after Israel’s elections, which are scheduled for September.
The Abraham Accords remain a pivotal focus as countries consider their positions regarding normalization of relations with Israel.
