Progress Stalled on Attorney General Nomination Amid IRS Lawsuit Concerns

The nomination of Todd Blanche for attorney general has encountered delays as lawmakers postponed a planned committee vote. The Senate Judiciary Committee intended to vote to advance Blanche’s nomination, but opposition from two Republican senators has cast doubt on his confirmation. A committee spokesperson announced the postponement of the vote as efforts to secure enough support continue.

A key issue in the delay is the resolution of President Donald Trump’s lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service, which involves a controversial settlement. This settlement includes immunity from tax audits for Trump and family members. The deal initially proposed creating an ‘Anti-Weaponization Fund’ to compensate individuals wronged by the Justice Department, but bipartisan backlash led to the fund’s cancellation. Republican Senators John Cornyn and Thom Tillis have sought written assurances that the fund is permanently canceled and have requested clarity on the scope of the tax immunity deal. They advocate for modifications to ensure the agreement applies only to current audits and not future tax filings.

Senator Cornyn, recently defeated in Texas’s Republican primary, criticized the Justice Department for obstructing progress. He emphasized the need for Blanche to act, expressing frustration with the department’s handling of the situation. Despite this, Blanche did not address questions from reporters after leaving Capitol Hill where he had been meeting with senators.

Efforts to meet Cornyn and Tillis’ demands continued, with the Justice Department sending revised language for the settlement agreement. The department remains committed to working with senators to resolve concerns.

Regarding Blanche’s nomination, Trump expressed confidence and praised Blanche’s capabilities, suggesting Cornyn’s opposition might stem from personal grievances rather than professional concerns.

Some legislators and judicial figures have scrutinized the settlement, questioning the potential revival of the ‘Anti-Weaponization Fund.’ Blanche previously declined a formal retraction. However, he indicated willingness to support legislation preventing the fund’s creation at his confirmation hearing.

The lawsuit related to Trump’s leaked tax returns has drawn significant focus, both within Congress and in judicial proceedings. A judge criticized Trump’s lawsuit, highlighting concerns of self-serving actions, and expressed unease with Blanche’s involvement, given his past representation of Trump. Blanche refuted the judge’s suggestions, asserting his disagreement with the criticism.
