Police and lawmakers in Britain called for calm after a night of violent protests in Southampton, southern England. The unrest followed the release of a controversial video related to a murder case.
The footage from Monday night showed officers handcuffing Henry Nowak, the murder victim, with his attacker watching on last December. Right-wing commentators and politicians responded by accusing the British police of bias against white individuals.
By Tuesday evening, hundreds gathered at the main police station in Southampton. Efforts to reach the killer’s family home escalated to clashes with officers blocking the street. Protesters threw rocks, flares, and garbage cans at police, attacking riot shields. Some draped themselves in the British flag.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood condemned the violence. “There can be no justification for hijacking this tragedy to stir up violence and disorder,” she stated, promising legal consequences for those involved.
She praised the police for their bravery and composure amidst the violence.
