Raiders’ Quarterback Dynamics: Mendoza and Cousins

The Las Vegas Raiders have high hopes for their newly drafted player, Fernando Mendoza, a champion from the Indiana Hoosiers and a Heisman Trophy winner. The team selected him in April’s NFL Draft with the expectation that he will shape the future of their franchise.

The timeline for Mendoza to become the starting quarterback is uncertain, as experienced veteran Kirk Cousins also joined the Raiders in the recent offseason. During a conversation with ESPN’s Dan Graziano, Cousins discussed the atmosphere in the quarterback room and competition during training camp.

“Good quarterback room. We’ve enjoyed just working together as a group. We have good dialogue every day. I think the organization is positioned well, having drafted Fernando,”

said Cousins. “I’m gonna try to hold him off as long as I can. We’ll see how it goes up ahead.”

When Graziano pointed out the unique situation of Cousins mentoring Mendoza, despite being competition, Cousins agreed:

“Oh yeah, you can do both. You can do both.”

Mendoza starts his NFL journey with strong credentials and large expectations. Having a veteran like Cousins could ease his transition and help him gradually take over as the starting quarterback, a strategy some teams have adopted with rookie QBs.

Raiders’ head coach, Klint Kubiak, announced last month that Cousins will open training camp as the team’s starter. The decision on who will start in preseason and regular-season games is pending.

“He’s the guy, and he deserves it because he’s played really good football. But I want Fernando and Aidan [O’Connell] to push him,”

Kubiak stated.

Cousins appears fully committed to his role with the Raiders, marking the fourth team he has played for since joining the NFL in 2012. The four-time Pro Bowler aims to share his NFL experiences with Mendoza and help lead the Raiders to success.

“Honestly, it’s exceeded my expectations. You know, I tried to get my mind right for living on Mars when I moved here, and it’s been great. It’s sunny every day. Great culture here. I like my teammates. I like the coaches. I like the system. So, I’m excited now; we just gotta get the ball right and go win some games,”

he expressed.

Fox Sports reported last month that sportsbooks set the Raiders’ win total at over 5.5 games. Achieving six wins would double their previous season’s record, which enabled them to secure the top draft pick, Mendoza. Observers will watch closely to see when Mendoza will take over the starting position as Cousins currently leads in the depth chart.
