On Sunday morning, a man accused of reckless driving led officers on a tumultuous chase in San Diego. The pursuit drew attention as it ended on a crowded beach, leaving beachgoers watching in surprise as law enforcement apprehended the driver.
The San Diego Police Department received multiple reports just before 7:30 a.m. Witnesses described the driver as being in a tan or gold Nissan Frontier, performing donuts in parking lots, and narrowly missing other vehicles. The erratic driving included possibly striking curbs and a retaining wall in the Pacific Beach area.
Officers quickly responded, spotting the man driving toward the ocean. An attempt to stop him failed as the driver fled, prompting a pursuit. However, the pursuit was called off due to the driver’s increasing disregard for public safety.
Later, officers identified the truck again, but the driver did not surrender. This led to another chase that was also terminated. By that time, the Nissan was wanted for felony evading, prompting officers to spread throughout the area in search of the vehicle.
Officers again located the truck and waited until the department’s Airborne Law Enforcement (ABLE) helicopter was able to track it. The helicopter followed the Nissan as it moved onto the beach, heading toward the ocean.
Beachgoers were astonished as officers closed in on the truck on the sand. The driver, identified as 25-year-old Griffin Charles Foy, exited the vehicle with hands raised and was detained. Although a police K-9 was present, it was not used during the arrest.
Police conducted a high-risk vehicle stop due to the seriousness of the alleged violations and Foy’s lack of concern for public safety. He was taken into custody calmly.
Foy faces several charges. These include felony evading a peace officer, obstructing or resisting a peace officer, and driving under the influence of drugs. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the pursuit.
