Reflecting Pool Drained for Repairs Amid Vandalism Allegations

1 month ago 0

By July 14, 2026, President Trump announced that the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool was emptied for repairs following his claims of vandalism. According to his post on Truth social, the damage required draining the pool to mend ‘the scars and damage’. He assured that the pool would soon be refilled and returned to service.

This draining forms part of a renovation initiative started in April, aimed at preparing for the nation’s 250th anniversary. However, complications arose this summer as algae caused the water to turn a fluorescent green, followed by damages to the new surface of the Reflecting Pool. The damages were attributed by the National Park Service to a sharp knife.

Reports indicated arrests connected to the alleged vandalism. David Hearn, a U.S. Olympic canoeist, faced accusations of damaging the pool’s sealant but pleaded not guilty. He claimed interest in the material after a long bike ride led him to the pool.

President Trump expressed that those responsible should face severe consequences. He described the damages as 300-yard-long slashes, emphasizing the pool floor being forcefully cut and lifted. The administration chose to delay repairs until after July 4th celebrations.

In late June, CBS News’ Ed O’Keefe sought evidence from President Trump regarding these claims. The President suggested awaiting court proceedings or contacting the Parks Department and Department of Interior for further details.
