Republicans Question Election Security in New Jersey

Nineteen House Republicans are questioning New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill about the registration of approximately 6,600 noncitizens who cast 400 ballots amid a reported software failure. The information came to public attention after an announcement by Sherrill.

The lawmakers expressed their concerns in a letter, highlighting the need for answers on how such a significant error in voter registration occurred. They emphasized this issue as a major breakdown in safeguarding electoral integrity, asking, “How do you know this was just a software glitch and not a nefarious act?”

Republican concerns focus on potential vulnerabilities in election security and insist on implementing legislation to bolster voter identification and adhere to federal citizenship proof standards.

The letter was signed by notable Republican Representatives from New Jersey, including Jefferson Van Drew and Chris Smith, though Tom Kean Jr. did not join.

Sherrill explained the error stemmed from New Jersey’s Motor Vehicle System, which mistakenly registered individuals between June 2023 and June 2024 who indicated they were noncitizens. She clarified that these individuals answered ‘no’ to being U.S. citizens but were erroneously registered to vote due to the system’s failure.

Republicans have raised questions regarding the state’s protocol for testing voter roll maintenance, identifying specific counties with improper ballot casting, and gauging Sherrill’s stance on voter-ID legislation.

“Republicans have been sounding the alarm for years about weaknesses in voter-registration systems, inadequate voter-roll maintenance, and the danger that noncitizens may be registered and permitted to vote in national elections, which is illegal under federal law,” the letter stated.

The group has set a deadline for responses to these questions by August 21, 2026.
