Rescue Efforts Following Devastating Nepal-Tibet Floods

4 weeks ago 0

Kathmandu, Nepal – September 1, 2026: Nepali officials have reported contacting one of the U.S. nationals previously missing after severe flash floods struck the Nepal-Tibet border. As rescue efforts continue, hope surfaces for worried families worldwide, awaiting news of loved ones.

Currently, 85 Americans remain unaccounted for. Confirmation of contact has sparked hope, but specific details remain unclear. Over 4,600 individuals are missing, and more than 1,050 have been confirmed dead in Nepal. In Tibet, 16 fatalities have been recorded, and more than 550 people are still missing.

According to the Nepal Tourism Board’s official document, rescuers made contact with five missing foreigners: one American, three Spaniards, and one Belgian. So far, 315 foreign nationals have been rescued. CBS News previously spoke with a couple, Anjana Raja and Pattabiraman Venkatesan from the San Francisco Bay Area, who survived. The couple was on a pilgrimage in Tibet when the floods struck, describing the scene as reminiscent of a ‘tsunami.’ They escaped to higher ground, spending the night in a goat shed before airlifted to safety.

Efforts are ongoing to locate about 600 hydroelectric power plant workers believed trapped at various sites in the affected area. Concerns persist over oxygen levels within mud-blocked tunnels. The flood resulted from a glacier collapse last week. Rescuers have found bodies far downstream in riverbeds. Residents can’t recall the Trishuli River ever being as swollen as last week. Rohit Tamang, 22, decided against leaving his lifelong home above the river, despite the devastation.

Nepal’s foreign minister expressed optimism. He stated many foreigners, likely marooned during mountain hikes, might be safe despite communication disruptions. Authorities hope that more positive news might emerge from the Himalayas.
