Resumption of Conflict: Russian Airstrikes on Kyiv Following Diplomatic Talks

3 weeks ago 0

On September 8, 2026, Russian airstrikes resumed in Kyiv, resulting in the deaths of at least two individuals, according to city authorities. The attacks followed diplomatic visits by President Trump’s envoys to Ukraine and Russia. The visit aimed to mediate between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who had agreed to a pause in fighting for the discussions.

The cessation of hostilities ended as airstrikes began again on Tuesday morning. Reports from Russia’s state news agency TASS confirmed the resumption. Kyiv experienced significant explosions, with local officials reporting two fatalities and seven injuries. The airstrikes caused substantial damage to buildings in areas including the Solomianskyi district, where a five-story apartment block suffered damage. In the Podilskyi district, vehicles were set on fire due to the strikes.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko indicated that individuals were trapped in a residential building as a result of the attacks. Meanwhile, Poland’s air force announced conducting “preventive operations” in response to Russia’s missile attacks, which temporarily halted flights from Lublin Airport.

Envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, having visited Moscow before traveling to Kyiv, described their discussions as meaningful and were optimistic about the outcomes. They emphasized the necessity for Russia and Ukraine to make compromises to achieve peace. Witkoff acknowledged that the discussions focused on strategies to endure the winter and what solutions could be implemented in the lead-up.

Prior to their Moscow journey, President Trump mentioned that the envoys carried a peace proposal intended to resolve the conflict that has persisted for over four and a half years. He expressed optimism, stating there was a hopeful chance for a resolution.

After these meetings, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov stated that the American delegation had thoroughly prepared for the visit. He noted the formulation of several ideas regarding potential settlements, although he did not specify these plans.
