Houthi Attack on Saudi Oil Facility

Yemen’s Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for an attack on a Saudi Arabian oil facility. This latest attack targeted the Aramco refinery in Jazan with a drone, according to Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree. The attack was retaliation for Saudi drones breaching Yemen’s airspace over Hajjah and Saada provinces.

The Saudi Energy Ministry confirmed a fire at the Aramco facility early Sunday but did not report any casualties. The cause of the fire remains unspecified. This incident marks a continuation of Houthi assaults on Saudi Arabia, which have included both missile and drone attacks.

Yemeni Port Attack

Fayed al-Noman, representing Yemen’s internationally recognized government, reported further Houthi aggression. Key Red Sea port Mocha was struck with missiles and drones. Mocha has been renovated to bypass Houthi-controlled Hodeida ports.

The escalation poses a threat of reigniting Yemen’s civil war, after a truce halted major conflict in 2022.

Iran’s Stance on Negotiations

Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized that diplomatic exchanges with the U.S. via intermediaries do not qualify as negotiations. Iran insists that genuine negotiations cannot occur until the U.S. addresses the violations of a memorandum of understanding.

Araghchi noted ongoing talks with Oman regarding new maritime routes through the Strait of Hormuz, although the reopening of the strait depends on further conditions.

Demands from Iran

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council asserted that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed unless the U.S. alters its approach. The council’s secretary, Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, issued demands for ending hostilities, lifting blockades, and removing sanctions as prerequisites.

The U.S. Central Command reported that the blockade has affected commercial shipping significantly, redirecting or disabling vessels.

U.S. Military Preparations

The Pentagon is urging faster production of weapons amid concerns over depleted missile stockpiles. Spokesman Sean Parnell linked efforts to modernize the military to the ongoing conflict.

Potential Iran-Oman Agreement

Negotiations between Iran and Oman could temporarily reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Ships would travel through defined routes without fees. The agreement aims to restore earlier arrangements involving the U.S. and Iran, potentially affecting talks about Iran’s nuclear program.

Endorsement from Gulf Cooperation Council members is anticipated, although final terms might change.
