The renowned artist shared the emotional hardships of watching his wife, Caroline, succumb to an alcohol-related illness. Orzabal disclosed that he fell in love with another woman, Emily Rath, before Caroline’s passing.

Years of Struggle

Orzabal spent years witnessing the gradual deterioration of Caroline’s health. Despite being advised to leave the marriage, he remained committed. He described reaching a breaking point, eventually realizing it was necessary to move forward.

“Why was it important to be so candid? Well, because it’s the truth,” he stated.

The couple’s marriage journey began in Bath, England, in 1982. They had two sons together. Despite the strain, they remained together for decades, even amidst frequent arguments and the challenges of Orzabal’s career.

Signs and Denial

By the late 2000s, Caroline’s health showed serious decline. Friends noticed changes in her behavior around 2011. Orzabal acknowledged the slow progress of her condition, attributing unintended causes to it.

“It was a slow process,” Orzabal recalled. The unsettling truth became evident only after her passing, leaving him in disbelief.

Facing Harsh Realities

Caroline’s condition escalated with hospitalizations and mental instability. Articles she hid and the severity of her condition became evident only later. Orzabal admits to feeling anger and frustration, realizing the impact of not taking earlier action.

Finding New Love Amidst Challenges

When Orzabal met Emily Rath, he acknowledged a budding friendship that grew into love—presenting him with a crossroads in his life. The decision to pursue life with Rath brought guilt but ultimately a sense of clarity about his path forward.

Legacy and Healing

Caroline passed away in 2017. Her loss left Orzabal confronting heavy emotions while managing family relationships and responsibilities.

In 2019, Orzabal sought help for his Ambien addiction, gradually welcoming healing with the support of Rath. They married in 2020 and welcomed a daughter, Eula, in 2025.

Orzabal emphasized respecting the memory of Caroline, noting her significance as the mother of their sons and withholding more painful details for respect.
