An incident at Six Flags Over Georgia has led to the temporary closure of several roller coasters across the United States. The tragic event involved a man, Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem, aged 42, from Atlanta, who fell to his death on Monday.
Cobb County Police reported that Kariem was likely ejected from the Goliath coaster. Witnesses, including Logan Conner, claimed he was seen levitating sideways in the air before striking other patrons and landing beneath the ride. Kariem was found unresponsive and not breathing.
The investigation into the accident is ongoing. Authorities have not provided updates regarding others who may have been injured during the incident.
Responding to the tragedy, Six Flags Entertainment Corporation has closed nine roller coasters spread across six parks as a precautionary measure. A representative stressed these closures are due to abundant caution.
The affected rides include:
- Raging Bull at Six Flags Great America, Illinois
- Goliath at Six Flags Magic Mountain, California
- Nitro at Six Flags Great Adventure, New Jersey
- Fury 325 and Thunder Striker at Carowinds, North Carolina
- Orion and Diamondback at Kings Island, Ohio
- Leviathan and Behemoth at Canada’s Wonderland
Bolliger & Mabillard manufactured all but one of the coasters, with the exception being Goliath at Magic Mountain, produced by Giovanola.
The Swiss company Bolliger & Mabillard issued a statement expressing sadness over the incident, stating that an active investigation is conducted to comprehend the situation. They emphasized their ongoing efforts and refrained from further comments.
The ride, Goliath, is categorized as a hypercoaster, characterized by its speed, airtime, and panoramic views. It utilizes lap bar restraint designs for a sense of freedom. Goliath is noted as the slowest and shortest among shut coasters, reaching speeds of 70 mph over 4,480 feet and elevating to 200 feet.
Historically, Six Flags Over Georgia has experienced similar tragic incidents, with Kariem being identified as the seventh fatality since 1989. In 2006, another individual died possibly due to a heart attack while riding Goliath.
