Russian Strikes in Ukraine Amid U.S.-Russia Diesel Deal

1 hour ago 0

Russian bombings in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region resulted in the deaths of at least 11 people, including three children, as reported by Ukrainian officials on Saturday. This incident occurred following an announcement by President Trump about a deal with Russia to acquire diesel, an act Ukraine claims may financially support Moscow’s ongoing conflict.

Mykhailo Semikin, head of the regional military administration, informed on Saturday that the strikes targeted residential buildings in Zaporizhzhia. Ivan Fedorov, co-chair of the region’s defense council, added that the attack injured at least 16 people.

Russia and Ukraine remain in a prolonged aerial confrontation even as their forces stand at a stalemate on the frontline. Over the past four days, intensified Russian attacks have led to over 60 fatalities in Ukraine.

President Trump’s announcement came just a day before these attacks. He shared that a deal had been reached with Russian President Vladimir Putin for diesel, an effort to lower fuel prices before the U.S. midterm elections. This move contrasts with a Russia sanctions law he signed recently, aiming to curb Russia’s oil and gas funding of the war.

On social media, President Trump revealed that during a call focused on a suspected plague case in Russia, he negotiated the delivery of 300,000 tons of diesel from Russia, with a promise for more in the following months.

The U.S. Treasury Department announced a temporary waiver of sanctions on Russia’s energy sector, to permit these supplies to stabilize the global market. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded strongly, asserting this action aids Russia in prolonging the conflict. He expressed concern over the decision, labeling it weak despite coming from robust partners.

The Ukrainian Embassy in Washington released a statement echoing Zelenskyy’s sentiment. Meanwhile, Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner were holding discussions with Ukrainian officials in Miami, purportedly to negotiate an end to the conflict. Zelenskyy criticized these diplomatic efforts, questioning their sincerity.
