Safety Concerns Rise With Robotaxis and E-Bikes

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is closely examining robotaxi safety. There have been multiple instances where autonomous vehicles have driven into active emergency scenes, obstructing first responders. NHTSA asserts that any autonomous vehicle unable to interact safely with first responders poses a public risk. This month, discussions between NHTSA and robotaxi developers aim to find solutions.

Increased E-Bike Incidents in Detroit

The Detroit metro area is witnessing a rise in incidents involving electric bikes (e-bikes). Police report more e-bike crashes as doctors treat an increasing number of related injuries. Some communities consider restricting or banning e-bikes due to these incidents.

“These Class 3 bikes are more like motor vehicles. They can reach speeds up to 28 miles per hour,” stated Dr. Robert Sherwin, an emergency room doctor. “The human body doesn’t change because a bike has a motor.”

Challenges in Road Sharing

John Hughes, a local bike shop owner, believes the main issue lies in road sharing. “Cars aren’t looking out for bikes…they don’t respect them as transportation,” he noted, pointing out the dangers due to distracted drivers.

E-bike rider Cam Cason supports this view, seeing e-bikes as more efficient than cars. “You don’t need to spend on gas,” he explained, highlighting e-bikes’ cost-effectiveness.

Nationwide E-Bike Safety Regulations

As safety concerns grow, states are tightening e-bike regulations. New Jersey now requires e-bike registration, a minimum rider age of 15, and a valid driver’s or e-bike license. The move aims to promote responsible riding and reduce injuries.

Concerns are fueled by incidents, including a New Jersey teenager’s death. Proponents argue that regulations such as licensing and helmet requirements will lower the risk of harm.

Surge in E-Bike Injuries in New York

NYU Langone Health noted a rise in brain and spine injuries from e-bike and scooter accidents in New York City. A Neurosurgery journal study highlighted that such injuries accounted for nearly 7% of trauma patients at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue. From 2018 to 2023, e-bike trauma cases escalated from less than 10% to over 50%.

Among the 914 treated patients, one-third suffered traumatic brain injuries. More than two-thirds required hospitalization, with 30% needing intensive care. The most common cause was collisions with vehicles, responsible for half of the injuries.

Fewer than a third of riders wore helmets, correlating with higher rates of severe injuries. Alcohol was involved in 20% of cases, linked to more severe outcomes and less helmet use.

Addressing Pedestrian Safety

Pedestrians struck by electric vehicles experienced brain injuries at nearly twice the rate of riders. Dr. Hannah Weiss, a neurosurgery resident at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, emphasized that micromobility injuries now require unprecedented neurosurgical care.

Dr. Paul P. Huang, a neurosurgery associate professor, stressed improving urban infrastructure. “Future studies should monitor these injuries across cities and evaluate the impact of protected bike lanes and helmet programs,” he said.
