Cornell University has appointed Sally Yates, former deputy attorney general during the Obama administration, to lead an independent review of how the university handles sexual assault allegations. Yates was dismissed by President Donald Trump early in his tenure.
This appointment comes as Cornell faces scrutiny following an alleged gang rape at a fraternity house in October 2024. Yates and her firm, King & Spalding, will examine Cornell’s internal documents, including case files, Greek organization records, law enforcement communications, and disciplinary records.
Yates’ Background and Experience
Yates brings decades of experience from the Justice Department. Her public profile was shaped by her decision to refuse defending Trump’s travel ban, leading to her dismissal. In May 2017, she testified before a Senate Judiciary subcommittee on Russian interference in the 2016 election.
Yates’ career began in the Justice Department prosecuting white-collar fraud and corruption. As U.S. attorney for Northern Georgia, she led the case against Olympic Park bomber Eric Rudolph. In May 2018, Yates returned to King & Spalding and led an investigation into misconduct in the National Women’s Soccer League.
Cornell’s Need for Review
Cornell selected Yates due to her expertise in higher education investigations. The review will assess how the university handled allegations involving members of the Chi Phi fraternity in 2024. This review will ensure Cornell’s responses align with their policies and procedures.
Along with Yates’ review, New York Attorney General Letitia James will conduct a separate investigation into the alleged incident. James was previously involved in a civil case against Trump. Her investigation will focus on the central case, while Yates will review broader university policies.
Cornell initially investigated the alleged assault, leading to student suspensions and expulsions. A lawsuit by the victim has brought national attention and questioned the university’s responses.
