San Diego Padres manager Craig Stammen shared his reasoning for keeping closer Mason Miller on the mound during Sunday’s game despite challenges in the ninth inning. Miller, regarded as one of MLB’s top pitchers, entered during the eighth inning against the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 2 of the National League Division Series (NLDS), efficiently handling his opponents. He returned for the ninth inning, where he faced difficulties, walking the bases loaded with two outs.
Stammen chose to keep Miller in to confront Jackson Chourio, who delivered a single to center field, resulting in two runs and giving the Brewers a 2-0 series lead as they head to San Diego. Stammen explained, “Going into the game, we were thinking of Mason for six outs anyway. Especially with how quick the eighth inning went for him, he was just battling the strike zone at the end.”
Miller’s performance throughout the season had been exceptional, with a 1.67 ERA over 70 innings and striking out 129 batters. He achieved 38 saves in 41 opportunities, leading the National League. However, he had not completed a six-out save since his time with the Athletics in 2024.
Impact of the Loss on Padres
The Padres face a significant challenge following their defeat on Sunday. They must secure three consecutive victories to advance to the National League Championship Series (NLCS). Their best starter, Michael King, is recovering and unlikely to pitch in the next two games.
Although facing a difficult situation, the Padres excelled against the Brewers at home during the season’s second half, achieving a series sweep. They have the potential to extend the series to five games by performing at their peak.
Before concentrating on a Game 5, they need to focus on Game 3, aiming to start their comeback behind Nick Pivetta on Tuesday at 9:30 p.m. ET/6:30 p.m. PT.
