Scott Brown Commends Sophie Cunningham and Criticizes WNBA Policies

1 month ago 0

Scott Brown, a former U.S. Senator and current Senate candidate in New Hampshire, praised Sophie Cunningham of the Indiana Fever for her strong advocacy in women’s sports during an interview on the Ruthless Podcast. In a conversation released Friday morning, Brown expressed admiration for Cunningham’s courage, stating, “I don’t miss a game when the [Indiana] Fever [are] playing. Sophie Cunningham had the guts to get up and challenge this crazy ideology and put up with that crap.” Earlier this summer, Cunningham made headlines by stating that female athletes should not compete against biological men.

Brown’s involvement in the women’s sports conversation is not new. He has personal ties through his daughter, Ayla, a former basketball player for Boston College. Brown noted, “My daughter committed to Boston College at 15. [She was a] Gatorade Player of the Year, two years in a row, 2,358 points in high school. And they had men, practice players, coming in and trying to make them better because they were bigger and stronger. To think one of them was going to take my baby’s job.” This anecdote underscores Brown’s longstanding investment in the topic.

In an opinion piece in the Union Leader, Brown criticized the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) for its policies concerning transgender athletes. He described the league’s stance as hypocritical and warned, “The WNBA better get their you-know-what together because they’re going to lose it all without even blinking.” His criticism reflects ongoing debates within sports about policies regarding transgender participation.

Currently, Brown is campaigning to replace the retiring Jeanne Shaheen in the Senate. He first gained political attention when he won a surprise victory in the special election for Massachusetts U.S. Senate in 2010, succeeding the late Sen. Ted Kennedy. Brown now faces a primary challenge from former Senator John Sununu on the Republican side, while several challengers, including Karishma Manzur, are competing against Rep. Chris Pappas in the Democratic primary. The general election is scheduled for November 3rd.

The Ruthless Podcast, which hosted Brown, is conducting a series of interviews with significant political candidates nationwide leading up to the midterms. Podcast co-host Josh Holmes commended Brown, saying, “You’re a good man. I’m glad you stayed in it for as long as you have because you’ve been a real warrior in a bunch of places that aren’t easy to be for sure.” This ongoing interview series aims to provide insights into the candidates’ positions and agendas.
