Scottie Scheffler’s Tough Start at The Memorial Tournament

4 weeks ago 0

Scottie Scheffler showed clear frustration after a challenging shot in the first round of The Memorial Tournament on Thursday. He expressed his disappointment to caddie Tedd Scott during their walk at the Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio.

The trouble began on the No. 16 hole when Scheffler’s shot appeared to land on the green but took an unexpected bounce into the nearby water. Overcome with disbelief, Scheffler shared his frustration, uttering comments like, “I don’t know what to do,” and “I can’t hear a word you’re saying.” As they continued, Scheffler emphasized his dissatisfaction, saying, “I feel like that was a good shot. Now I’m in the water.”

A video on X highlighted more of Scheffler’s disappointment during his rough opening round. “Absolutely flushed a seven iron, and we get the wind wrong, and now I’m in the water. I don’t think you understand how frustrating that is,” he told Scott. He further explained how he struggled with the wind, causing his “good shots” to miss their mark.

The reaction from fans was swift, with some suggesting his attitude was becoming difficult to watch. Comments included observations on his visible frustration and comparisons to a “child” who doesn’t handle setbacks well. Despite the criticism, Scott remained calm, allowing Scheffler to vent, which commentators noted might be part of his role as caddie.

Scheffler has faced challenges in his 2026 season. He began well, securing a win at The American Express in January, but hasn’t claimed another victory since. His performance at events like the Masters, where he finished second, indicates his continued competitiveness.

At the conclusion of Thursday’s round, Scheffler ended 1-over par (73), tying for 33rd place, keeping him within reach of defending the title he won last year. The top spot on the leaderboard was a four-way tie between J.J. Spaun, Wyndham Clark, Tommy Fleetwood, and Ryan Gerard.

The pressure to maintain his leading status in golf may be affecting Scheffler. This incident might reflect the strain of striving to replicate his past winning performances, like his victory at Pete Dye Stadium Course earlier this year.
