The interaction between Earth’s atmosphere and its oceans forms a continuous feedback loop, influencing weather patterns, ocean currents, and winds. This relationship becomes more complex as atmospheric temperatures rise.
Climate change doesn’t only impact land; it also significantly affects the ocean’s behavior. For many years, the ocean has served as a heat reservoir for the planet. The upper layer of the ocean, approximately 200 meters deep, absorbs much of the heat from human activities using fossil fuels.
Scientists use various models to predict changes in ocean behavior. In a warmer climate, surface currents worldwide are expected to accelerate. One notable example is the Atlantic Circumpolar Current near Antarctica. This shift could lead to consequences like sea level rise, altered fish migration, and changes in storm patterns.
