Sen. Ted Cruz Calls for Prosecution of Anthony Fauci

Senator Ted Cruz, a Republican from Texas, has demanded legal action against Anthony Fauci, former White House COVID-19 adviser. Cruz wants Fauci held in contempt, prosecuted for perjury, and imprisoned. This request follows Fauci invoking the Fifth Amendment over 100 times during a Senate hearing.

“Years from now they’ll look back and say, ‘What collective madness overtook this country?’” Cruz expressed to Fox News Digital. Cruz accuses Fauci of showing contempt for Congress and the American public, alleging that Fauci’s diary reveals he repeatedly lied to the nation.

Anthony Fauci, who previously directed the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and advised numerous U.S. presidents, testified under subpoena regarding his pandemic response role. The hearing occurred at the U.S. Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee in Washington, D.C., on July 29, 2026.

Cruz’s statements came after Rand Paul, Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman, announced plans to pursue contempt charges against Fauci. Paul objects to Fauci’s refusal to answer questions during the hearing.

“Dr. Fauci ought to think about what it says about the end of his career, that what he will be remembered for the most is pleading the fifth more than 100 times,” Cruz said, emphasizing Fauci’s perceived detrimental impact.

Cruz and Fauci have had a prolonged dispute, mirroring other Republican senators’ disagreements with Fauci over his COVID-19 approach and alleged misinformation on the virus’s origins.

“In his diary, he wrote early on that it was clear that the COVID virus did not come from the wet market in Wuhan and then he turned around and said exactly the opposite thing on national television,” Cruz said.

Fauci’s private journals, which were released, suggest he initially considered the possibility of a laboratory origin, which he later downplayed in public statements.

Senator Cruz further accused Fauci of promoting school lockdowns. Fauci’s diary claims he convinced officials in New York and California to enforce school closures, contradicting his public claims of opposition to such measures.

“In his diary, he brags about convincing Democrats in New York and California to shut schools down and yet he goes on TV and says, ‘Oh, I wasn’t for shutdowns,’” Cruz continued, critiquing the impact of these shutdowns.

Cruz believes the learning loss from these closures will have long-lasting effects on students.

“The fact that he knew he was lying to the American people — he should be held in contempt, he should be prosecuted for perjury and he should go to jail.”
