Senate Democrats Block Voter ID Bill Despite Previous Support

During the early hours of Saturday, Senate Democrats blocked a key part of the SAVE America Act. This component, a voter ID bill, had received Democratic support in the past. Senate Republicans, led by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., could not secure backing for the bill amid a flurry of last-minute legislative activities.

While several Democratic senators represent states with voter ID laws, opposition remained. Schumer acknowledged support for voter ID, having included it in the Freedom to Vote legislation. Yet, Schumer and his caucus opposed the bill from Sen. Jon Husted, R-Ohio. Currently, 36 states enforce voter ID practices, with 23 requiring photo identification and nine represented by Democratic senators.

The Senate’s session marked a pivotal moment before lawmakers departed Washington, D.C., for campaigning in vulnerable states. Republicans have repeatedly faced setbacks with the SAVE America Act, opposed by both Democrats and some GOP members in various forms.

Husted’s proposal would mandate voters show identification to obtain ballots for federal elections. Options included unexpired driver’s licenses, state-issued IDs, passports, military IDs, or tribal IDs, all with photos. This March, Republicans tested Democratic support for voter ID with Husted’s bill as an amendment to the SAVE America Act, facing defeat along party lines.

Senator Mike Lee, R-Utah, highlighted Democratic ambiguity on voter ID. Many Democrats expressed comfort with voter ID, Lee noted, yet resisted specific measures linked to the SAVE America Act.

Republicans attempted to initiate a budget version of the SAVE America Act, potentially enabling budget reconciliation along party lines. However, former President Trump halted these efforts. The Senate reconvenes in early September, mere weeks before crucial midterm elections that may alter Senate power dynamics.
