Senate Democrats Invest in Mississippi Senate Race to Challenge GOP

2 hours ago 0

Senate Democrats are making a significant move in Mississippi’s U.S. Senate race, with their top campaign spending group, Senate Majority PAC, entering the fray. The group plans to invest $1.2 million in television advertisements to support Scott Colom, a district attorney running against incumbent Republican Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith. This action marks the group’s first involvement in the race this year, signalling an aggressive approach in a traditionally Republican stronghold.

The advertisement campaign is set to start on Wednesday, continuing through Election Day. Lauren French, the spokesperson for Senate Majority PAC, stated that Colom’s competitive race has pressured Hyde-Smith, indicating potential vulnerabilities in her re-election bid.

With only two weeks remaining before the election, the impact of the advertisement remains uncertain. Nevertheless, it constitutes a notable investment, considering the total spending in the race has reached about $8 million. Currently, Colom has outspent Hyde-Smith, investing approximately $4.6 million compared to Hyde-Smith’s $3.2 million, as reported by AdImpact.

Jake Monssen, Hyde-Smith’s campaign manager, pointed out the timing of the spending as being late in the race. He expressed confidence that voters would reject the Democratic agenda at the polls.

Cindy Hyde-Smith, initially appointed and subsequently elected in 2018, faces a challenging re-election in a historically Republican-dominated state. Despite Trump’s significant lead in the 2024 presidential race, Democrats argue that Hyde-Smith’s performance was weaker, as evidenced by her underperforming Trump by 6 percentage points in 2020.

The television ad criticizes Hyde-Smith for a perceived lack of legislative accomplishments, highlighting her voting record on Medicaid. It simultaneously promotes Colom’s achievements as district attorney. The campaign includes digital efforts alongside statewide television broadcasts.

Colom’s campaign manager, Gerard Henderson, emphasized the competitiveness of the race due to extensive grassroots efforts and volunteer support. Henderson expressed confidence in having sufficient resources and momentum for victory.

High-profile Democrats, including Georgia Senator Raphael Warnock and Vice President Kamala Harris, have actively campaigned with Colom, enhancing his visibility and support. Harris is scheduled to appear at a rally for Colom on Thursday.

Currently, Republicans control the Senate with a 53-47 majority and anticipate a more favorable election map with fewer seats to defend. However, economic challenges and a controversial war in Iran have buoyed Democratic optimism, leading the Senate Majority PAC to allocate funds in traditionally conservative areas like Mississippi and Kansas.

Colom’s potential victory would make him the first Black senator from Mississippi since the Reconstruction era. Some Democrats have voiced concerns about insufficient investment in Southern states, with Senator Warnock discussing missed opportunities on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
