Senate Health Committee Chairman Endorses CDC Nominee Amid Concerns

Senate Health Committee Chairman Bill Cassidy (R-La.) endorsed President Trump’s nominee Dr. Erica Schwartz for the role of Director at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Cassidy’s endorsement comes after a confirmation hearing where Schwartz was questioned about her ability to protect the agency from political interference and stand up to Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. if asked to act contrary to scientific evidence. Although Cassidy initially expressed frustration due to Schwartz’s evasive responses, he later conveyed trust in her judgement.

Cassidy stated, “I’m confident that she knows what she is doing and will stand against those who do not.” He mentioned that as a gesture of goodwill, the HHS had amended the CDC’s webpage on vaccines and autism. Kennedy had previously altered the page to dispute the well-established scientific consensus that vaccines do not cause autism.

Cassidy highlighted that although there is more work needed to repair damage to the U.S. public health response, revising the webpage is a positive first step. However, the principal assertion on the page remains unchanged, indicating that studies have not invalidated a connection between vaccines and autism and citing ignorance by health authorities toward studies supporting such a link. What has altered is the removal of Cassidy’s name from a footnote under the statement ‘Vaccines do not cause autism,’ which previously noted an agreement with committee leadership. It now states that scientists have not pinpointed autism’s causes and acknowledges future updates as new evidence becomes available.

Healthcare Developments in Washington

Dr. Anthony Fauci is slated to appear before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee next Wednesday following a subpoena by Chairman Rand Paul (R-Ky.). Paul, critical of Fauci for allegedly concealing U.S. involvement in risky viral research in China, will lead the inquiry.

Meanwhile, the entire Democratic caucus submitted an amicus brief to uphold the current FDA rules for prescribing abortion pills.
