This marks the second failed attempt by Republicans to pass the legislation.
The SAVE America Act sought inclusion in a nearly $70 billion budget package for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol. Sen. Lindsey Graham’s amendment required 60 votes to succeed, a threshold unmet due to Democratic resistance and lack of total Republican support.
Sen. Graham criticized Democrats for opposing voter ID requirements, suggesting it facilitates election cheating. He argued against noncitizens voting and minors undergoing sex transitions. His remarks followed the Democrats’ rejection of linking voter ID legislation with a sports ban for transgender individuals.
Sen. Alex Padilla countered Graham’s arguments, reflecting on a previous bipartisan defeat of similar proposals. Padilla underlined existing election safeguards and highlighted the emotional context, given the political rhetoric against transgender individuals during Pride Month.
