Senator Cornyn Seeks Assurances from AG Nominee Todd Blanche

Texas Republican Senator John Cornyn has stated his position ahead of a meeting with Trump-nominated Todd Blanche, tying his support for Blanche’s appointment as permanent attorney general to receipts of assurances on the Justice Department’s debated $1.8 billion anti-weaponization fund. Cornyn specified he plans to meet with Blanche on Wednesday morning and emphasized the importance of having the acting attorney general’s assurances in writing prior to the meeting. If these assurances are not provided, Cornyn indicated the meeting will not occur, according to Igor Bobic of NOTUS on X, Tuesday.

The senator’s insistence reflects within-party tensions regarding the Justice Department’s trajectory and its investigative roles, especially in high-profile cases such as that of Jeffrey Epstein. Todd Blanche has filled the role of premier law enforcement official in the U.S. since April, following the dismissal of Pam Bondi. Newsweek reached out to both the DOJ and Cornyn’s office for commentary but had not received a response by Tuesday night.

Blanche’s Nomination Controversy

Cornyn, who lost his primary to Trump-endorsed Ken Paxton, is requesting written guarantees from Blanche concerning the future of the controversial funding program. This fund has become central for lawmakers who criticize the perceived politicization of the Justice Department. In a post to X on Tuesday, Cornyn stated, “Fake news alert: there is no ‘deal’ on Blanche nom. They know what they have to do.” This suggests he views verbal commitments as insufficient and seeks more concrete assurances before proceeding with a scheduled Wednesday meeting.

Blanche, nominated for the attorney general role, faces a stringent confirmation process. Lawmakers are examining his Justice Department plans with some Republicans expressing confidence in his qualifications and alignment with Trump administration priorities. Yet concerns from senators like Cornyn and Thom Tillis highlight schisms over policy issues. Tillis mentioned to CNN that discussions with the Justice Department about ending the fund are “going pretty well,” expressing hope that the White House will act on this.

Cornyn’s move introduces further uncertainty to Blanche’s nomination, which is reportedly shaky. With the Senate closely divided, even a single Republican dissent can be pivotal, making individual negotiations crucial. The planned meeting between Cornyn and Blanche will likely influence whether Blanche can address the senator’s concerns and secure his confirmation support.

Craig Agranoff, a political professor at Florida Atlantic University, commented that “Cornyn is making a reasonable request given the unusual structure of that settlement agreement.” He noted that senators often demand written commitments during nominations where language leaves room for future revival.

Fund Controversy

The fund aimed to compensate those claiming unfair targeting by government probes. Blanche characterized it as a response to claims of “lawfare” by President Donald Trump and his allies. The proposal, however, encountered bipartisan disapproval and legal challenges, culminating in a Virginia federal court’s temporary injunction against its establishment.

Criticism included fears it could offer compensation to individuals convicted related to the January 6 Capitol attack, including those guilty of assaulting officers. Blanche has declined to dismiss such eligibility publicly. Last month, under legal and political pressure, Blanche announced, “We’re not moving forward with the fund, period,” signifying a notable retraction for the administration.

Washington’s Larger Debate

Cornyn’s comments highlight a broader Washington debate on the Justice Department’s future role, considering questions about accountability, funding priorities, and political sway. As Blanche strives for support, senators indicate that commitments secured during confirmation influence the department’s operational expectations.
