Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat, appeared via video at the Republican Midterm Convention in Dallas. The event took place at the American Airlines Center, and Kent Nishimura of AFP captured the moment.
In his brief, 64-second video, Fetterman introduced Dave McCormick, Pennsylvania’s Republican senator. Over time, Fetterman and McCormick have built a close professional relationship. Fetterman described McCormick as a senator who effectively completes his responsibilities, adding he values McCormick’s friendship.
Rumors circulated that Fetterman planned to praise former President Trump. However, his comments did not extend that far. He appeared in front of an industrial site in Pennsylvania, wearing his signature black hoodie, to discuss the importance of preserving the region’s steel industry jobs. Pointing to a U.S. Steel mill, he stated, “That’s exactly the kind of thing that we’ll work on together. We’ll work with President Trump to fight and defend the steel way of life, right here in the Steel Valley.” This marked his closest reference to support for Trump during the video.
Fetterman emphasized his Democratic affiliation multiple times throughout the video. He also touched on his concerns about certain aspects within his party. “Yes, I’m a Democrat,” he stated. “Why am I here talking to you today? Because, well, I’m a common sense Democrat. I’m always going to stand with America. I’m always going to reject the extremes and socialism and that anti-American way of life.”
Recently, Fetterman has distanced himself from the Democratic Party. A Wall Street Journal article described his lack of engagement in senatorial duties and an increasing focus on relationships with conservative media and advocacy for Israel. This report stemmed from interviews with former staff and lawmakers.
In response to these claims, Fetterman issued a statement to CNN, labeling the article as “lies, half-truths, innuendos, smears and anonymous.” He clarified, “No matter how many smears or stories, I’m proud to continue to deliver for Pennsylvania.” Fetterman has stated that he would only leave the Democratic Party if it adopts an anti-Israel stance.
Fetterman was elected in 2022, during which he suffered a stroke and subsequently battled depression. According to a recent poll by the New York Times, Philadelphia Inquirer, and Sienna University, Fetterman is viewed more favorably by Pennsylvania Republicans than Republican Senator McCormick. However, only 22% of Democrats in the state hold a favorable view of him.
