Senators Express Doubts Over Todd Blanche’s Nomination Amid IRS Deal Concerns

2 weeks ago 0

The nomination of Todd Blanche as attorney general is uncertain due to skepticism from Republican senators over a settlement deal with the IRS involving President Trump. Republicans have postponed a crucial vote following concerns from Senators John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina. These senators are specifically worried about a provision within the deal that shields Trump and his family from further tax investigations.

Senator Cornyn criticized the lack of written assurance that the audit shield would not apply to future tax liabilities or extend to others. The decision to delay the vote was announced by Senator Charles E. Grassley of Iowa, who leads the committee, to allow for further negotiations and gain support for Blanche’s nomination. Grassley has yet to explain why Blanche has not complied with requests to formally address these concerns.

Senator Tillis supports Cornyn’s concerns but remains hopeful that an agreement can be reached. He believes the issue is primarily related to language concerning the audit deal. During Blanche’s confirmation hearing, concerns were raised about his independence from the White House. Cornyn refused to commit to supporting Blanche, citing Blanche’s previous role as Trump’s personal lawyer.

The administration has attempted to address these concerns, but no resolution has been reached. Blanche remains two votes short of securing his confirmation as attorney general.

In related news, the Justice Department is requesting the deportation of an Afghan woman residing in Texas, alleged to be a supporter of ISIS. This is the first case to be heard by the Alien Terrorist Removal Court, set up to expel immigrants accused of terrorism. The woman is linked to a foiled plot involving her son and son-in-law, who pleaded guilty to planning a mass shooting on Election Day 2024.

The removal court, which employs classified information, is being used by the administration as part of its aggressive deportation agenda. Despite having no criminal history, prosecutors argue the deportation of the woman on security grounds, citing her alleged support and indoctrination of her family with ISIS ideology.

Markets reject Warsh’s approach after the Fed holds interest rates steady.

Financial markets responded negatively to the Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh’s approach during his second news conference. The Fed decided to maintain interest rates, which led to an increase in long-term borrowing costs. Investors expected a tougher stance on inflation, which was not met, leading to a sell-off in the bond market.

Warsh emphasized the Fed’s focus on price stability but refrained from signaling intentions for future rate increases. Despite market disappointment, Warsh argues that the Fed benefits more from direct signals from markets.

China threatens to retaliate as the U.S. moves to block robot imports.

The United States’ proposal to ban the import of humanoid robots from China has heightened trade tensions. The Chinese government views this as discriminatory and threatens retaliation. The U.S. initiative aims to promote domestic development of advanced robotics due to concerns over national security related to data collection and AI dependency.

China’s Commerce Ministry has criticized the move, likening it to past restrictions on telecommunications equipment. Chinese companies dominate the humanoid robot market, raising questions about the effectiveness of potential U.S. restrictions.
