Social Security Payments and Schedule
Social Security benefits are paid to more than 75 million Americans monthly, covering retirement, spousal, survivor, and disability benefits. These payments occur in lump sums rather than staggered. However, the date a beneficiary receives their payment varies depending on their birth date and benefit type. The Social Security Administration (SSA) follows a specific staggered payment schedule.
Current Payment Schedule
The payment schedule this week targets recipients with birthdays between the 1st and 10th of any month. Payments for them will be released on Wednesday, September 9. This schedule applies to recipients of retirement, spousal, and survivor benefits, excluding Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which is paid at the start of the month. If you receive SSI alongside other benefits, you would have already gotten your payment on Thursday, September 3.
Upcoming Payment Dates
- Wednesday, September 16: Payments for birthdays between the 11th and 20th.
- Wednesday, September 23: Payments for birthdays between the 21st and 31st.
Retirement Benefits Information
Retirement payments vary based on a worker’s lifetime earnings and age when claiming benefits. In 2026, the maximum monthly retirement benefit reaches $4,152 for those retiring at full age with maximum taxable earnings. For early retirees at 62, the maximum drops to $2,969 per month. On the other hand, waiting to retire until age 70 can suffice with benefits of up to $5,181 monthly. Full retirement age is set at 67 for those turning 62 in 2026.
Most beneficiaries get less than the maximum amounts. By July 2026, the average monthly payment for retired workers was $2,085.98. Across all beneficiaries, including retirees, survivors, and those on disability benefits, the average was $1,940.08 monthly. Disabled workers averaged $1,635.27, while widows and widowers received around $1,932.74.
Projected Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) for 2027
Millions of beneficiaries await inflation data to understand potential raises in their payments for 2027. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) plans to release the August Consumer Price Index on September 11. This data forms part of the basis for the next year’s COLA. Preliminary projections suggest a 3.6% increase from the Senior Citizens League and a 3.5% rise from AARP, both exceeding the 2.8% applied for benefits in 2026.
COLA offsets inflation seen over time, preventing a loss in purchasing power. The SSA calculates adjustments using the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). It compares the average CPI-W of July, August, and September to the same months from the previous year. Price increases lead to the COLA for the following year. July began the 2027 calculation period, with September figures expected on October 14. An official COLA announcement for 2027 will follow shortly thereafter. This boost applies to benefits payable for December 2026, with disbursement scheduled from January 2027 onward.
