Social Security September Payments and Upcoming Changes

1 week ago 0

Millions of Americans who rely on Social Security benefits are set to receive their September payments this week. These payments are crucial for many, covering retirement, spousal, survivor, and disability benefits. Over 70 million U.S. citizens benefit from these programs.

The SSA organizes payment distribution throughout the month based on recipients’ birthdays. Those whose birthdays fall between the 21st and 31st will receive their payments on Wednesday, September 23. A few exceptions exist. Individuals who started receiving benefits before May 1997 and those who qualify for both Social Security and SSI usually receive payments at the start of each month.

Beneficiaries who don’t receive their payment on the expected date should wait three working days before reaching out to the SSA.

Determining Your Benefit Amount

The amount of Social Security benefits varies. For retirees, factors such as their earnings history and the age they start claiming benefits are key determinants. According to SSA estimates, monthly retirement benefits for a retiree who taxed at or above the maximum rate through their career might reach $2,969 if claimed at 62, $4,152 at the full retirement age, and $5,181 at age 70.

Still, most recipients don’t receive the maximum amounts. Recent SSA data from July 2026 indicates an average payment of $2,085.98 for retired workers. Across all beneficiaries, including retirees, survivors, and disability recipients, the average payment was $1,940.08.

For each benefit type:

  • Retired worker: Average $2,085.98; maximum $5,181 at age 70.
  • Spousal benefit: Average $986.53; maximum $2,076.
  • Survivor benefit: Average $1,634.61; maximum $5,181 for surviving spouses.
  • SSI: Average $736.54; maximum federal payment $994 for individuals.

October Payment Schedule

October brings another payment cycle:

  • SSI payments: October 1.
  • For those who started receiving Social Security before May 1997 or qualify for both Social Security and SSI: October 2.
  • Retired workers, spouses, and survivors with birthdays from 1st to 10th: October 14.
  • Birthdays from 11th to 20th: October 21.
  • Birthdays from 21st to 31st: October 28.

An important announcement in October concerns the annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2027. The COLA prevents benefits from losing value due to inflation. Estimates predict an increase between 3.4% and 3.6%, surpassing 2026’s 2.8% increase. SSA will announce specifics on October 14.
