Socialists and Controversy Stir at College Democrats Convention

Hasan Piker, a well-known Twitch streamer, stirred significant attention at the College Democrats of America Summer Convention. During the event, he passionately advocated for a left-wing takeover of the Democratic Party, voicing strong criticisms against members he deemed as ‘compromising’. Minnesota Senate candidate Peggy Flanagan amplified this call for change by openly advocating for the dismantling of ICE. The convention highlighted growing tensions within the Democratic Party, signaling an increasing divide.

Amid these developments, Piker faced renewed scrutiny due to a controversial element in his streaming setup. On July 13, viewers noticed a newspaper page in his background, displaying the front page from September 12, 2001, edition of The New York Times, which reported the 9/11 attacks. This choice rekindled criticism Piker faced in 2019 when he commented during a stream that ‘America deserved 9/11’. Though he later clarified the statement, labeling it as a critique of U.S. foreign policy, the backlash continues to resurface.

Abdul El-Sayed, a speaker at the convention, emphasized that rallying with Piker did not equate to endorsing his controversial remarks. Despite featuring alongside notable figures like David Hogg and Randi Weingarten, Piker drew the most scrutiny. Mocked for wearing what some described as a Mao Zedong-style jacket, he criticized Democrats who, in his words, ‘compromise’ and ‘betray’.

“No more to the fascist reactionaries, but no more to the Democrats who will collaborate and cooperate with the fascists,” Piker declared.

His appearance and speech faced backlash from various groups, notably the DSA Watch and CDA Jewish Caucus, both questioning Piker’s inclusion at the event. The Anti-Defamation League also expressed disappointment, suggesting that Piker’s participation normalized antisemitism within the Democratic community. Despite criticism, some Democrats consider Piker influential in reaching younger voters.
