In recent months, the Department of Justice (DOJ) has pursued over 1,000 major fraud enforcement actions nationwide. This surge follows the creation of the National Fraud Enforcement Division. The coordinated initiative seeks to safeguard taxpayer funds from fraud schemes targeting vital federal programs like Medicaid, SNAP, HUD, Social Security, and SBA. These programs primarily serve vulnerable populations, including the elderly, sick, and homeless.
Recently, a significant arrest was made when a fugitive accused of embezzling more than $600,000 in federal food stamp benefits was apprehended. Manjit Singh Bedi, recognized as one of the FBI’s Most Wanted Fraudsters, faced capture in India last month. FBI Director Kash Patel announced the successful return of Bedi to the United States.
In a statement, Patel confirmed Bedi’s return, emphasizing the FBI’s achievements in repatriating fugitives. “BACK IN THE U.S. – Manjit Singh Bedi, one of the FBI’s Most Wanted Fraudsters, arrested in September in India,” Patel posted on X.
Over the last 20 months, the FBI has seen a notable uptick in extraditions and removals, counting 260 instances—over a 70% increase from the prior period. This success is attributed to strong partnerships with international law enforcement agencies.
Bedi allegedly operated a fraudulent Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) scheme in Tacoma, Washington, defrauding the U.S. government of at least $600,000. The scheme, running between March 2024 and June 2025, involved swapping SNAP recipients’ Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards for cash, while he pocketed a significant portion of the benefits.
Authorities issued a federal arrest warrant on May 21, 2026, charging Bedi with violating release conditions after he drove to Canada and subsequently fled to India. As part of the FBI’s Most Wanted Fraudsters program, Bedi’s arrest marks the capture of six fugitives since the program’s inception three months ago.
Bedi, a naturalized U.S. citizen, was previously a subject of an FBI reward of up to $150,000 for information leading to his arrest and conviction. He will now face charges in the U.S. for his alleged crimes. Patel thanked international partners for their crucial assistance in Bedi’s case.
