A woman determined to turn her new apartment into a dream home encountered a significant setback. Sophie Collins, 29, from Hampshire, United Kingdom, had plans to redecorate her recently purchased apartment in her colorful, maximalist style.
“My style is very colorful and maximalist,” she said. She had big ideas for the “completely blank canvas” when she moved in.
Shortly after moving in late April, Collins began to feel unwell. By early May, symptoms appeared. She was busy stripping paint and sanding, initially thinking she was overworking herself. “I was going to work every day and then coming home and doing the apartment up. It didn’t occur to me that it could have been mold exposure,” Collins explained.
Her symptoms included extreme fatigue, a chronic cough, headaches, sinus pressure, a stuffy nose, and sneezing. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) states mold exposure can result in similar health issues, such as a stuffy nose, sore throat, coughing, burning eyes, or skin rash.
Collins had previously read about mold exposure. Although she noticed some mold by the windows and on blinds, she feared hidden mold might have been painted over prior to her arrival. She consulted mold specialists, confirming her concerns about high moisture and humidity levels promoting mold growth. “I hadn’t made it up in my head, and it was in fact causing me some health concerns,” Collins noted.
The apartment underwent mold treatment. Afterward, Collins’ symptoms vanished and she has felt healthy since. However, her redecoration plans are on hold. Due to the anti-mold treatment, painting or wallpaper is not advised for a full year. So far, she only managed to decorate the entryway, hallway, and part of the living room. Her next project is the bedroom.
On August 25, she shared her story on TikTok at @its_sophies_place, mentioning that she’ll resume decorating “287 days from today.” Passionate about interior design, she awaits the chance to fully express her style once the year-long warranty on the treatment expires. Meanwhile, she’s focusing on using furniture and completing smaller projects to make her apartment feel more homely.
