Trump Commends Cunningham During Ohio Rally
Former President Donald Trump complimented Indiana Fever’s Sophie Cunningham during a rally in Youngstown, Ohio. He described the WNBA star as “beautiful” and noted that she attracts many male fans. Trump humorously remarked on the challenges politicians face when complimenting women in today’s political climate.
“You’re not allowed to say that anymore, however, as a politician. Please, please, let me take it back. Anytime a politician says a woman is beautiful, that’s generally the end of his political career in the modern-day politic world,” Trump stated.
Trump further suggested Cunningham’s appeal would benefit team attendance, implying her presence draws crowds beyond her on-court skills.
“Sophie is a beautiful young woman. You probably wouldn’t mind her on the team, not to help you with points, but to help you with attendance. The attendance would be great,” he added.
Popularity Spurred by Advocacy and On-Court Defense
Cunningham has built a significant fan base since joining the Fever, notably standing up for Caitlin Clark amid aggressive play against the third-year standout. Her popularity surged following comments on the participation of biological males in female sports.
Cunningham previously commented that girls and women’s sports should be exclusive to biological females, emphasizing her stance on protecting young female athletes.
“I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men,” Cunningham voiced. “It’s really important to protect children, and that’s little girls who are also involved in that category.”
Fan Engagement and Jersey Sales
Cunningham’s engagement with fans is a hallmark of her presence in the league, often seen taking selfies and interacting with admirers before games. As a testament to her impact, her jersey tops sales charts on Fanatics, marking her as a popular choice among WNBA fans.
