SpaceX Moves Forward with Cursor Acquisition to Strengthen AI Ambitions

2 weeks ago 0

SpaceX has confirmed its plan to acquire Cursor’s parent company in an all-stock transaction valued at $60 billion. This move enhances Elon Musk’s strategic goals in artificial intelligence. The decision follows the company’s recent record-breaking IPO.

Negotiations between SpaceX and Cursor’s parent company, Anysphere, commenced in April. The deal allows SpaceX to further develop its AI models. Following SpaceX’s initial public offering, the company decided to proceed with the acquisition, capitalizing on its soaring stock, which has seen a significant rise since the IPO.

With the acquisition, Mr. Musk, also CEO of Tesla, continues to expand into the AI sector. He established xAI, responsible for the Grok chatbot, competing against ChatGPT from OpenAI and Anthropic’s Claude. Earlier this year, xAI merged with SpaceX, leading to a combined valuation amounting to over $1 trillion.

SpaceX is also planning to build a large AI chip manufacturing facility in Texas. It secured partnerships with Google and Anthropic for computing resources, reflecting its AI ambitions. While Mr. Musk’s companies regularly merge, acquisitions of external companies are infrequent.

According to SpaceX, the Cursor acquisition should finalize in the third quarter of this year. Cursor, established in 2022, rapidly gained attention as technology companies adopted its AI tools, drawing significant investment from firms such as Thrive Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, and Accel.

In a statement made in April, Cursor expressed that limited computing power for AI model training had restricted its growth. Access to xAI’s resources as a result of this deal is expected to resolve this issue.
