Spanish Prime Minister Faces Accusations Amid Migration Crisis

3 weeks ago 0

A Spanish opposition leader criticized the country’s Socialist Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, over his administration’s handling of the migrant situation in Ceuta, a North African enclave.

Santiago Abascal, leader of the Vox party, made his comments during a parliamentary session. He questioned whether Prime Minister Sánchez was under pressure from Morocco regarding the border crisis. Abascal labeled Sánchez a “traitor” and “a dog” during his speech.

Sánchez Responds to Criticism

As the session continued, Sánchez reacted, stating, “I may be a dog, but I have no master.” Abascal then displayed letters spelling “Traidor,” the Spanish word for “Traitor,” in the parliament.

Spain has seen major demonstrations in response to the migrant influx in Ceuta. Critics hold Sánchez accountable for the crisis, with some accusing him of appeasing Morocco in this matter.

Border Tensions and Intelligence Warnings

The country has witnessed more than 70,000 migrants arriving in Ceuta in July. Although many have returned to Morocco, several remain in the area, residing in temporary shelters along the coast.

Spain’s national intelligence agency, the National Intelligence Center (CNI), had issued several warnings before the mass arrival of migrants from Morocco in late July. Government-released declassified documents show that the CNI sent alerts to the Spanish government’s delegation in Ceuta. The alerts included messages shared on social media urging people to make a crossing attempt by land and sea.

The information from the CNI reflected that two groups, comprising a total of 180,000 followers, were involved in the movement. This provided insight into the scale of the situation.
