Senior quarterback Blainey Dowling played his first home game in Chicago for St. Xavier, ending with a challenging 42-point loss. Despite the outcome and the difficult weather, Dowling expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, saying, “It was a blessing to be out there.”
Dowling’s career at Eastern Illinois was marked by significant health challenges, including two elbow surgeries. Doctors advised him to retire medically, which he initially considered. However, Dowling chose to continue playing at St. Xavier, describing each day as a blessing. In Saturday’s game, Dowling achieved 175 yards and two touchdowns, although the Cougars lost 59-17 to Indiana Wesleyan in a Mid-States Football Association crossover game.
Freshman wide receiver Coen Demack was notable, receiving five passes for 81 yards, including a 56-yard touchdown catch. Senior defensive back Owen Schickel stood out with 14 tackles, 10 solos, and two forced fumbles. On the opposing team, Arjun Lothe passed for 278 yards and three touchdowns, while Ryan Whitwell ran 27 times for 243 yards and two touchdowns.
Despite the loss, Dowling cherished playing back in Chicago with family and friends cheering. Dowling, who previously led his high school team to a state championship, expressed his thankfulness for another chance to play in the city.
Previously, Dowling excelled by throwing for 449 yards and four touchdowns in a loss against Taylor, earning MSFA Midwest League Offensive Player of the Week honors. St. Xavier’s coach, Mike Feminis, acknowledged Dowling’s potential, saying he has already achieved impressive feats despite a four-year hiatus. He advised Dowling not to expect immediate replication of past successes.
Coen Demack, with 27 catches for 352 yards and four touchdowns this season, commented on Dowling’s winning mentality. Facing strong opponents like Wisconsin-Whitewater and Taylor, Dowling remained optimistic, stating, “We need to turn it around.” He emphasized perseverance and fighting through adversity.
Dowling, a communications major, aspires to open a training facility to mentor young athletes. He hopes his journey inspires others to believe that setbacks can be overcome with determination and effort. Despite challenges, Dowling sees future potential in giving back to the next generation.
