Quarterback Injuries Raising Concerns

Legendary sports agent Leigh Steinberg expresses concern over NFL team’s handling of quarterback injuries. As Week 3 approaches, five starting quarterbacks are already injured, including New York Giants’ Jaxson Dart, who will miss the regular season. Steinberg stresses the importance of teams having multiple backup options to safeguard their season and Super Bowl chances.

Critical Insights From Steinberg

“It’s a real problem, teams without three quarterbacks are making a mistake, the starting quarterback is likely to be hurt at some point,” Steinberg told OutKick.

Steinberg highlights the risks teams take by rostering only two quarterbacks, as demonstrated by the Giants. If Jameis Winston gets injured following Dart’s injury, the Giants would lack an active quarterback, posing a significant threat to their competitive viability.

Financial Constraints

The salary cap complicates investing in backup quarterbacks, given the soaring salaries of starters. Despite the difficulty in securing quality backups, Steinberg warns teams without them are vulnerable.

The NFL’s Defensive Challenge

“You have bigger, stronger defensive players who can harm quarterbacks. The action centers around him, with more chances to get hurt,” Steinberg noted.

Despite protective rules since 2018 designed to shield quarterbacks— such as restricting defenders from fully landing on quarterbacks— Steinberg asserts quarterbacks remain vulnerable due to the nature of the position.

Cultural and Economic Impact

Quarterback injuries can affect not only a team’s season but also NFL viewership. As quarterbacks are akin to movie stars, their absence might lead to declining fan interest. Steinberg emphasizes the need for vigorous protections, while maintaining the game’s competitive essence.

“Every time they enhance protective rules, purists claim it’s softening the game. I’m for vigorous protections while keeping competitiveness,” Steinberg shared.

Steinberg’s Career Highlights

Inducted into the California Sports Hall of Fame in 2017, Steinberg has represented many high-profile clients, including Steve Bartkowski, Steve Young, Troy Aikman, Warren Moon, among others.
