The Houston Texans, part of the NFL’s five winless teams this season, face significant pressure to secure a victory. After reaching the playoffs last year, the team is now at 0-3 under head coach DeMeco Ryans. This weekend’s game against the Dallas Cowboys could be a turning point.
Sports commentator Stephen A. Smith emphasized the importance of Sunday’s game during his segment on ‘First Take.’ “Their season is on the line. Houston cannot afford to lose this game,” Smith stated, highlighting the high stakes of the Texans’ positioning within the competitive AFC South division. Teams like the Jacksonville Jaguars show strong potential, and the Indianapolis Colts present a capable threat despite their challenges. Dropping to 0-4 would severely hinder Houston’s playoff aspirations.
Smith pointed out issues within the Texans’ defensive play, which has dropped to 16th in yards allowed despite leading in total defense last season. Additionally, the offense hasn’t delivered satisfactory performances. A close 34-31 loss to the Buffalo Bills was followed by a lackluster 20-6 defeat against the Cincinnati Bengals. In their last game, the Texans accumulated 223 yards and fell short at 19-17 against the Colts, missing opportunities from three forced turnovers.
Quarterback C.J. Stroud is at the center of criticism. Although Stroud hasn’t thrown an interception this year, his average of 6.6 yards per pass attempt raises concerns about his effectiveness. Smith questioned Stroud’s potential for securing a significant contract extension, saying, “C.J. Stroud is in a contract year. He wants his bag. He’s not showing that he’s worthy of the bag that he covets right now.”
The upcoming game against the Cowboys kicks off at 1 p.m. ET, marking a crucial test for the Texans as they strive to alter their winless streak.
