Stephen A. Smith Urges Sports Fans to Resist Political Divisiveness

Sports have long united Americans, transcending political disputes. Stephen A. Smith aims to maintain this unity. In a recent broadcast of “The Stephen A. Smith Show” on SiriusXM, coming from the Fanatics Fest sports convention in New York City, Smith passionately addressed the growing trend of politics infiltrating sports discussions.

Smith voiced concerns about how politics is impacting perceptions of WNBA star Caitlin Clark. He implored fans to avoid allowing “divisiveness” to pervade the sport. “This is America, for all the divisiveness and challenges we face,” he stated. “People flock here for the opportunities. Politicians trying to invade sports and sow division shouldn’t succeed.”

NBA commissioner Adam Silver described the Clark debate as “political ping pong.” Smith warns this could escalate tensions. “When the NBA commissioner labels it ‘political ping pong’ because of Clark’s race and abilities, politicians may exploit this division,” he cautioned.

Smith appealed to Clark and her peers to bridge divides and cautioned politicians to refrain from meddling. “Caitlin Clark isn’t the adversary. Her fellow players aren’t enemies either. The WNBA commissioner should unify them, countering political interference,” he advised.

The WNBA and its players often attract political opinions. Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., criticized the league’s treatment of Clark. Rep. Brandon Boyle, D-Pa., argued about the perceived lack of marketing for Clark’s talents. Former President Donald Trump commented on an incident involving Clark and Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas, who was suspended for a hard foul against Clark.
