Strait of Hormuz Tensions: Trump’s Claims and Iran’s Denials

Oil flow through the strait remains significantly reduced. The Brent crude oil prices went up by 2.7% on Tuesday. The rise reflects market uncertainties rather than confidence in any diplomatic proceedings.

On Monday, Trump described Iran as “unbelievably duplicitous.” He claimed they requested talks on resolving the conflict, yet proclaimed no discussions were occurring. Trump posted on Truth Social, “They ask for a meeting, some would say ‘beg.’ Talks begin with more scheduled in the immediate future, and they say, openly and proudly, that they’re not having any discussions, that nothing is being talked about, and they’re only dealing with ‘Oman.’”

Responding to Trump’s assertion, Iranian Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei told reporters no negotiations with the U.S. were underway. Iran is in conversation with Oman for a temporary safe passage through the strait. Baghaei mentioned Iran has no plans for hosting foreign delegations or sending negotiators abroad soon.

Trump later stated at the White House that dialogues with Tehran were “going on right now.” He commented, “It’s amazing we have a little problem with Iran because we have many talks, and we’ll say we have or we don’t have. You know, we’re straight about it, but they deny it. But they’re not denying it now. They just put out a statement not denying it.”

Regarding the Strait, Trump mentioned discussions on reopening it “completely open by tomorrow, literally.” The second phase would address Iran’s nuclear program. Previously, Trump halted new strikes on Iran, allowing room for fresh negotiations.

An attack occurred on a cargo vessel off Oman’s coast on Monday night, as reported by UKMTO. The vessel, a dry bulk ship, was hit by an “unknown projectile,” compelling the crew to evacuate, with one seafarer missing, sources informed Reuters.

In peacetime, about 100 ships might pass through the Strait each day. Monday saw at least six vessels transit, revealed NBC News analysis of MarineTraffic data. Among these were the Chinese owned tanker Starway and the Indian managed Horizon 1, which continued using the Iranian channel south of Larak Island.

Without an agreed safe passage between Iran and Oman, some ships navigate along the Omani coast with transponders off to avoid broadcasting positions. The ship hit Monday evening was among these, indicative of the persistent risks to vessels transiting the Strait.
