Sunny Hostin Discusses Educational Choices and Racism in Schools

1 week ago 0

The View co-host, Sunny Hostin, recently touched on the issue of racism her children faced while attending predominantly White private schools. Hostin’s comments came during a discussion about Nikole Hannah-Jones, the 1619 Project founder, who expressed regret over sending her daughter to predominantly Black, high-poverty public schools in Brooklyn. Hannah-Jones had aimed to address educational inequality by her decision.

Hostin compared her own experience, sharing her decision to send her children to a predominantly White private school. Although her children excelled academically in the well-resourced environment, they encountered psychological and racial challenges. She recounted instances where her daughter faced bullying related to her hair and derogatory remarks about her appearance.

Despite acknowledging the strong academic environment of the private school, Hostin emphasized concerns about systemic issues in schools, particularly in predominantly non-White districts. She noted the funding disparity where schools in non-White districts receive $23 billion less annually than their White counterparts. Hostin pointed out the need to address how public schools, funded by property taxes, contribute to this systemic problem.

In response to Fox News Digital’s inquiry, neither ABC nor the Ethical Culture Fieldston School, which Hostin attended, provided immediate feedback. Hannah-Jones commented that the discussion should center on families lacking resources to access better educational options, instead of her personal decisions.

Hostin aligned with Hannah-Jones on the necessity to prioritize the enhancement of public education for Black children. In her earlier statement, Hannah-Jones conveyed hope that the same level of concern about her personal choice would also focus on the broader educational resource challenges faced by less privileged Black families.
