Greg Hawthorne, a former running back for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Super Bowl champion, has died at the age of 69. His family shared the news on social media.
The Steelers chose Hawthorne with the 28th overall pick in the 1979 NFL Draft, selecting him from Fort Worth Polytechnic. During his rookie season, the Steelers won against the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl XIV.
A post on Facebook read, “On behalf of the Hawthorne family, it is with deep sadness that our brother Gregory Dale Hawthorne passed away last night. Please keep his mother and his children, his brother and sisters as well as the whole family in your prayers.” No information was released about the cause of death.
Hawthorne’s career in the NFL spanned from 1979 to 1983 with the Steelers. He took on the roles of both running back and wide receiver, playing in 59 games. His performance included 522 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns. Additionally, he had 55 receptions for 710 yards and three touchdown catches.
Further in his career, Hawthorne played with the New England Patriots for three seasons and spent a final year with the Indianapolis Colts. One of his notable contributions was during the 1985 AFC Championship, where he recovered a fumble on the second half’s opening kickoff. This action aided the Patriots in winning the game and advancing to Super Bowl XX.
Throughout his career, Greg Hawthorne played in 105 games, scoring 11 total touchdowns and accumulating 1,639 yards from scrimmage.
