How Rising Bond Yields Are Impacting AI-Fueled Stock Rally

1 hour ago 0

U.S. bond yields have surged this year, putting brakes on a stock market propelled by artificial intelligence (AI) advancements for years. Amid a backdrop of economic uncertainty caused by various factors including high oil prices due to conflict in Iran and growing government deficits, investors have pivoted towards bonds, causing fluctuations in stock indices.

The S&P 500, which experienced a steady increase from late March to mid-August, has dropped nearly 90 points since October 7. Similarly, the Nasdaq composite has witnessed a decline of over 1,100 points in the past two weeks, marking its lowest point in more than a month. Major firms in the information technology sector, such as Microsoft and Nvidia, also suffered declines with the sector overall losing more than 500 points recently.

Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers, emphasized, “If those [tech] stocks don’t do well, it’s pretty hard for the stock market to do much of anything.”

Over the past seven months, bond yields have climbed globally, with the 10-year U.S. Treasury bond yield dropping around 25 basis points from October 7, reaching a 24-year high of 5.365 percent during intraday trading. Despite this decrease, the yield remains more than one percentage point higher than its February 27 closing level, just before the U.S. and Israel initiated strikes on Iran. The 30-year Treasury bond yield also showed a decline, decreasing from 5.733 percent during intraday trading on October 8 to under 5.45 percent this week.

These developments underscore the intricate relationship between geopolitical events and economic factors, influencing investor behavior and stock market performance. The interplay between rising bond yields and AI-driven stock growth presents challenges and opportunities for investors attempting to navigate this dynamic landscape.
