Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts commended Lonnie Bunch, the outgoing head of the Smithsonian Institution, amidst controversy with the Trump administration. Bunch, 73, announced his retirement following tensions regarding the portrayal of U.S. history at the Smithsonian.
The Trump administration criticized the National Museum of American History, prompting Bunch to respond internally that there is ‘room for improvement,’ but the critique did not fairly represent the museum’s work.
Roberts praised Bunch for his leadership, highlighting his pursuit of ‘excellence in telling our nation’s story.’ Bunch had resisted internal criticism, stating that the Smithsonian is driven by scholarship and accuracy in portraying the full story of America.
The issue escalated when the administration warned that the Smithsonian might lose access to federal artifacts and grants unless changes in leadership were made. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and White House Domestic Policy Council Director Vince Haley expressed concerns about ideological biases and potential misconduct in a letter to Congress.
The letter alleged violations of federal antidiscrimination laws, claiming the leadership fostered a hostile work environment and discriminatory practices. These allegations posed threats to the institution’s funding and access to resources.
Despite the accusations, Bunch maintained the Smithsonian’s dedication to understanding, hope, and growth. The situation highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by cultural institutions in balancing historical narratives with political considerations.
