Justice Clarence Thomas, accompanied by Justice Samuel Alito, dissented as the Supreme Court dismissed a lawsuit filed by Florida against California. The case involved the alleged issuance of commercial truck driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants.
Florida initiated the lawsuit following a high-profile accident within the state last year. In this incident, a truck driven by an Indian national, Harjinder Singh, resulted in the deaths of three individuals. The state contended that Singh lacked legal status in the United States and accused California, along with Washington, of improperly issuing him licenses. Singh is currently facing criminal charges related to the crash.
Justice Thomas expressed disagreement with the Court’s decision not to consider Florida’s claims, emphasizing that Florida had no alternative forum for its complaint. In his dissenting opinion, which accompanied the orders list released by the Supreme Court on Sunday, Thomas stated, “This Court declines to even hear Florida’s claims, even though it has nowhere else to bring them. Because I would allow Florida to file its complaint, I respectfully dissent.”
