ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Rays secured a place in the World Series after defeating the Cleveland Guardians 7-3 in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series. This victory grants the Rays their third pennant since becoming a major league franchise 29 seasons ago. Their opponent will be the Milwaukee Brewers, marking the first World Series where both teams aim for their first title since 1980.
Yandy Díaz and Junior Caminero were pivotal in the win, each hitting a two-run homer. Freddy Peralta contributed with 5 1/3 strong innings on the mound. The Rays broke ahead in the second inning with a two-run double by Richie Palacios, ultimately clinching the game with Bryan Baker as their closer.
Rays manager Kevin Cash expressed confidence in his team, stating, “We got one more bite,” as they celebrated their advancement to the World Series. Díaz, through an interpreter, had promised a Game 6 win and delivered with a 416-foot homer, extending the Rays’ lead. Erik Neander, Rays President of Baseball Operations, acknowledged Díaz’s crucial role, saying, “That was unbelievable.”
The Rays’ victory means a return to the World Series for the first time since a six-game loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020. Meanwhile, the Guardians’ loss extends their World Series drought to 78 years.
“I couldn’t be more proud of our group. It just hurts. It stings,” Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said. “We had a team to go and just weren’t able to get there.”
On the anniversary of their 2008 AL pennant, the Rays delighted a sellout crowd of over 40,000 fans at Tropicana Field with their win. This season, the team played home games in Tampa due to renovations at Tropicana Field, caused by damage from Hurricane Milton. Next, they look forward to a new stadium near the NFL’s Buccaneers by 2029.
Junior Caminero boosted the team’s scoring with his first postseason home run. Enthusiastic fans cheered, and Caminero visibly engaged, mimicking Randy Arozarena’s crossed-arm pose after the homer.
“This is for you!” Caminero shouted to the crowd after the game. “Let’s go! I can’t hear you!”
The Guardians mounted a challenge in the eighth inning, loading the bases and narrowing the score. Tyler Wells and Ian Seymour struggled, leading to two runs, but Kevin Kelly closed the inning striking out Brayan Rocchio.
“Credit to our guys. They never stopped fighting. That’s who they are,” Vogt said after the game.
The Rays next engage in the World Series, beginning with Game 1 on Friday in Milwaukee. Fans and players alike hold high hopes for the team’s continued success.
