Team USA’s Victory over Spain
Team USA pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 76-66 win over Spain on Saturday, advancing to the FIBA Women’s World Cup final. This victory extends a winning streak in the World Cup that dates back to 2006. Throughout the game, Spain maintained pressure, tying the score at 58-58 by the end of the third quarter. However, the Americans excelled in the final stretch, securing a victory by winning the last period 18-8.
Breanna Stewart was instrumental for the U.S., contributing 16 points and 6 rebounds. Kahleah Copper added 13 points, while Jackie Young finished with 12 points and 5 rebounds. Young’s performance was crucial in the fourth quarter, where she scored 6 points, helping the team gain a significant lead.
Stewart emphasized the importance of fundamentals, stating, “Just continue to do the little things.” She highlighted the need for strong rebounding and defense, particularly in the second half.
Team USA is set to face France in the final, with Stewart acknowledging the upcoming challenge. “This is going to be challenging, and obviously we have the biggest one tomorrow,” she remarked. “We’re going for gold, and that’s what we’re going to do.”
Kara Lawson’s Strategy and Challenges
The win against Spain was not without its difficulties. Team USA shot 40% from the field and had a poor performance from the 3-point range, making only 3 of 18 attempts. They also faced challenges with turnovers, committing 15 in the game. Caitlin Clark, who continues to come off the bench, contributed minimally with 1 point, 1 assist, and 1 rebound.
Head coach Kara Lawson reflected on the team’s performance, noting that they needed to improve their defensive coverages and reduce turnovers. She stressed the importance of staying aggressive while maintaining composure.
Looking Ahead
As the U.S. team prepares for the final against France, Stewart referred to France as “a really tough team.” With a fifth consecutive World Cup championship on the line, Team USA aims to maintain its dominance on the world stage.
