A rabid bat discovered near a neighborhood in California has led health authorities to caution residents against interacting with wildlife. They urge immediate medical consultation if there’s a suspicion of exposure. The bat was found on May 26 near Palo Verde Common in South Fremont, positioned close to sidewalks and accessible to both pedestrians and animals, according to the Fremont Police Department.
Alameda County Vector Control confirmed that the bat tested positive for rabies. Although the agency is examining the case, no human or animal exposures have been reported so far.
“Rabies is a fatal disease caused by a virus that affects the brain and nervous system,” police stated in a news release. “It is preventable if the exposed person or animal receives a series of rabies vaccine shots as soon as possible after exposure,” the release added.
Local residents have been informed of the incident and the associated rabies risks. Authorities advise anyone who had contact with the bat to reach out to the Alameda County Public Health Acute Communicable Disease Program at 510-267-3250 and seek medical help promptly.
Residents are warned to avoid interactions with bats and other wild animals that might carry rabies. Animals typically linked with rabies include skunks, foxes, coyotes, and raccoons.
“Unvaccinated dogs and cats are considered to be at medium to high risk of contracting and potentially spreading the rabies virus,” the police noted. They emphasized that sick or dead animals should not be touched and any unusual animal behavior should be reported to Fremont Animal Services or the Alameda County Public Health Department.
Residents should refrain from handling bats found indoors or on their property. Authorities suggest keeping pets’ rabies vaccinations current as a preventive measure.
Residents are also encouraged to contain their pets within their property boundaries and eliminate outdoor food sources that could attract wildlife.
