Team USA women’s basketball coach Kara Lawson aspires for her team to provide Americans with a reason to unite during an emotional weekend for the nation. The U.S. advanced to the FIBA Women’s World Cup final with a 76-66 win against Spain in Berlin on Saturday. This victory followed the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
Lawson highlighted the added significance of winning the championship considering the anniversary’s somber context. She expressed pride in representing the USA, having been part of USA Basketball since age 17. Lawson remarked on feeling the U.S.’s presence in Europe, especially during the anniversary.
Nearly 3,000 lives were lost in the 2001 terrorist attacks in New York City, at the Pentagon, and near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Anniversaries of this tragedy are marked nationwide through various remembrance ceremonies.
Lawson described the anniversary as a lasting, powerful memory for her and the team. Winning the World Cup for the country would be a significant achievement. She believes their efforts could foster national unity, transcending the women’s basketball community, which has seen conflicts and rivalries in recent years.
Lawson’s connection to USA Basketball stretches back to her teenage years. She contributed to the Americans’ Olympic gold win as a player at the 2008 Beijing Games. As a coach, she led the team to a women’s 3×3 basketball gold at the Tokyo Olympics and was an assistant coach during the 2024 Paris Games, winning gold.
In 2025, Lawson was selected to guide the women’s national team through the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Now, she stands on the brink of her first major international championship win as head coach of the senior team. The Americans secured this opportunity by overcoming Spain, who tied the semifinal entering the fourth quarter. Team USA excelled in the final period with a 12-2 run, securing the victory.
Breanna Stewart spearheaded the American effort with 16 points. Kahleah Copper added 13, while Jackie Young contributed 12. This victory extended their World Cup streak to 35 games, having not lost since the 2006 semifinals against Russia.
Next, Team USA faces France in Sunday’s title game after France defeated Germany 86-64 in the other semifinal. This matchup is a repeat of the 2024 Olympic gold-medal game, which the U.S. narrowly won.
France, undefeated in the tournament, surpassed the U.S. in FIBA’s final power ranking after group play. The Americans aim for their fifth consecutive and 12th overall World Cup title, while France competes in its first World Cup final.
